Winemaker
Louis Roederer was founded in 1776 and remains run by the same family to this day, with Frédéric Rouzaud now at the winemaking helm. In 2012, the Rouzaud family purchased Champagne Leclerc Briant to control production as a grower-merchant. This not only increased their total vineyard ownership to 240 hectares (planted on some of Champagne’s best sites) but means Louis Roederer is now the biggest biodynamic producer in Champagne. They currently have 82 hectares of biodynamically and organically farmed land.
Appearance:
In the glass, the Collection 244 presents itself with a radiant golden hue, accented by a delicate, persistent stream of fine bubbles. The effervescence is both lively and elegant, setting the stage for a refined tasting experience.
Nose:
The aromatic profile is richly layered, opening with enticing notes of fresh orchard fruits such as green apple and pear, intermingled with the delicate fragrance of white flowers. As the bouquet evolves, more complex undertones emerge—hints of toasted almonds, brioche, and a subtle minerality that speaks to the terroir of the Champagne region. A whisper of citrus zest and honeyed nuances adds further depth and intrigue.
Palate:
On the palate, the Collection 244 is a masterclass in balance and harmony. The initial attack is crisp and refreshing, dominated by flavors of ripe apple, juicy pear, and a touch of nectarine. This fruit-forward character is beautifully complemented by a creamy mousse and a rounded, silky texture. Mid-palate, the Champagne reveals its layered complexity with notes of toasted hazelnut, freshly baked bread, and a hint of spice, reminiscent of cinnamon or nutmeg. The mineral backbone ensures a clean, precise finish, with a lingering sense of elegance and sophistication.
Finish:
The finish is long and satisfying, marked by a persistent minerality and a delicate touch of salinity that leaves the palate refreshed and craving another sip. The subtle interplay of fruit, toast, and mineral notes continues to evolve, ensuring that each taste remains as captivating as the last.
Food Pairing:
Louis Roederer’s Collection 244 is versatile enough to be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif but also pairs beautifully with a range of dishes. Consider serving it alongside fresh oysters, delicate seafood dishes such as scallops or lobster, or a creamy cheese like Brillat-Savarin. For a more adventurous pairing, try it with sushi or lightly spiced Asian cuisine to highlight its intricate flavours.
