Winemaker
The Lyrarakis estate is a family vineyard and winery which has been producing high quality wines since 1966. Lyrarakis has devoted itself to the revival of indigenous, almost extinct, rare varieties such as Dafni, Plyto, Melissaki and others, vinifying wines that highlight their unique and distinctive character. Lyrarakis is located in the mountainous commune of Alagni (440 metres above sea-level), south of the city of Heraklion, in Crete. The soils are predominantly loam with either more sand or clay depending on the vineyard site. In charge of winemaking, is Myriam Ambuzer who has been vital in securing Lyrarakis a place in the elite wineries of Greece. Her philosophy emphasises precision, purity and supple texture of the fruit.
Appearance
The wine exhibits a brilliant, pale straw colour with a slight greenish tint, indicative of its youthful freshness and vibrancy.
Nose
On the nose, the Lyrarakis Assyrtiko is a captivating bouquet of aromas. Initial impressions reveal zesty citrus notes, predominantly lemon and lime, interwoven with nuances of green apple and pear. As the wine opens up, more complex layers emerge, including hints of white flowers, such as jasmine and orange blossom, and subtle undertones of wet stone and sea spray, reflecting its terroir.
Palate
The palate is where this Assyrtiko truly shines. It is crisp and refreshing, with a lively acidity that provides a precise and clean mouthfeel. The citrus flavors detected on the nose continue on the palate, accompanied by a slight herbal edge and a pronounced minerality that is characteristic of Assyrtiko. This mineral backbone is both distinctive and delightful, lending a sense of place and authenticity to the wine.
Finish
The finish is long and satisfying, with a persistent citrus zestiness and a touch of salinity that lingers, inviting another sip. The balance between acidity, fruit, and mineral notes is impeccable, making it a versatile wine suitable for a variety of food pairings.
Food Pairing
The Lyrarakis Assyrtiko from Voila Vineyard pairs beautifully with a range of dishes. Its high acidity and mineral qualities make it an excellent match for seafood, particularly oysters, grilled octopus, and fresh fish dishes. It also complements Mediterranean cuisine, such as Greek salads, grilled vegetables, and lemon-infused dishes. For a more adventurous pairing, try it with sushi or ceviche.
