Winemaker

The Lyrarakis estate is a family vineyard and winery which has been producing high quality wines since 1966. Lyrarakis has devoted itself to the revival of indigenous, almost extinct, rare varieties such as Dafni, Plyto, Melissaki and others, vinifying wines that highlight their unique and distinctive character. Lyrarakis is located in the mountainous commune of Alagni (440 metres above sea-level), south of the city of Heraklion, in Crete. The soils are predominantly loam with either more sand or clay depending on the vineyard site. In charge of winemaking, is Myriam Ambuzer who has been vital in securing Lyrarakis a place in the elite wineries of Greece. Her philosophy emphasises precision, purity and supple texture of the fruit.

Appearance
The wine presents a lovely, translucent ruby colour with a slight garnet hue at the rim, indicative of its refined and delicate character.

Nose
On the nose, the Lyrarakis Liatiko Aggelis Vineyard is aromatic and complex. It opens with a delightful bouquet of ripe red fruits, such as cherries, raspberries, and strawberries. These fruit aromas are complemented by floral notes, including dried roses and violets. As the wine evolves in the glass, additional layers of spice emerge, featuring cinnamon, clove, and a touch of nutmeg, alongside subtle hints of dried herbs and an earthy minerality.

Palate
The palate of this Liatiko is elegant and well-structured. It is light to medium-bodied, with silky tannins and a vibrant acidity that provides a refreshing and balanced mouthfeel. The red fruit flavors detected on the nose are mirrored on the palate, with cherries and raspberries taking the forefront. There is an added complexity of dried figs and a hint of leather, enhancing the wine’s depth. The spice notes of cinnamon and clove are more pronounced, adding warmth and intrigue, while the earthy and herbal undertones contribute to its overall complexity.

Finish
The finish is long and graceful, with the red fruit and spice notes lingering harmoniously. The wine’s acidity and fine tannins ensure a clean and satisfying conclusion, leaving a lasting impression of sophistication and finesse.

Food Pairing
The Lyrarakis Liatiko Aggelis Vineyard pairs beautifully with a range of dishes. Its bright acidity and complex flavour profile make it an excellent match for Mediterranean cuisine, including roasted lamb, grilled vegetables, and tomato-based dishes. It also pairs wonderfully with pasta dishes, especially those featuring rich tomato sauces or mushroom-based sauces. For a delightful cheese pairing, try it with semi-hard cheeses like Gruyère or Manchego, which complement the wine’s nuanced flavours.
