Happy World Whisky Day! – The perfect opportunity to crack open a bottle!
We hope you are as excited as we are for World Whisky Day! To help you celebrate, we have 3 classic Whisky Cocktails that you must try!
We have also developed our own unique cocktail that you will love! It’s a perfect balance of sweet and bitter that helps to enhance the whisky flavours.
What is Whisky?
Whisky (if Scottish, Canadian or Japanese) or whiskey (if Irish or from the United States) is a type of distilled alcoholic beverage made from fermented grain mash. Whisky has many classes and types and is strictly regulated around the world.
These types and classes depend on what grains are used, how it is fermented, how it is distilled and what type of wooden barrels they are aged in. These different processes and grains can have a great effect on the flavour of the whisky as well as the specific classification of the whisky. For example, Scotch whisky can only be made in Scotland and can only be labelled as such if it is made with malted barley or grain and has been aged for at least 3 years.
The simplest way to enjoy whisky is neat or will a few drops of water, to open up the flavours. However, if you are looking for the classic whisky cocktail, look no further! See below to learn how to make an Old fashioned, A Rusty Nail (it’s better than it sounds, trust me) and a lovely Whisky Sour. If you are looking for something new to tantalize the taste buds, try our own cocktail recipe – we call it Angel Face.
Old Fashioned
Ingredients:
- 60ml Whisky (we Recommend – Lagavulin 16 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky)
- 1 tsp granulated sugar or 2 tsp of simple sugar syrup
- 1-2 dashes Angostura Bitters
- Splash of water
- 2 Orange Slice
- 2 Maraschino cherry
- Ice
STEP 1
Into a tumbler add sugar, bitters, water 1 cherry and 1 orange slice.
STEP 2
Muddle until Sugar is fully dissolved.
STEP 3
Add Ice and stir in the whisky.
STEP 4
Garnish with the other orange slice and maraschino cherry.
Rusty Nail
Ingredients:
- Ice
- 50ml Whisky (we recommend –The Macallan, 12 Year Old – Sherry Oak Whisky)
- 1 Tbsp of honey-flavoured whisky Liqueur (We recommend Drambuie)
- Strip of lemon peel
STEP 1
Add Ice to a tumbler.
STEP 2
Pour over the whisky and honey-flavoured whisky liqueur.
STEP 3
Gently stir, before topping off with a strip of lemon peel.
Whisky Sour
Ingredients:
- 50ml Whisky (we Recommend – Compass Box, Limited Edition Blended Malt Scotch Whisky)
- 35ml lemon Juice
- 12ml sugar syrup
- 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
- ½ fresh egg white
- Lemon peel (for the zest)
- Ice
STEP 1
Add the whisky, lemon juice, sugar syrup, bitters, ice and egg white to a shaker.
STEP 2
Shake hard. Then strain into a glass with ice.
STEP 3
With the lemon peel squeeze over the top, with the shiny side down and serve.
Angel Face
Ingredients:
- Ice
- 50ml Whisky (we recommend – GlenDronach 21 Year Old – Parliament)
- 35ml Champagne Liqueur
- 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
- 2 Maraschino cherry
STEP 1
Add Champagne liqueur, bitters, ice and 1 Cherry to a glass and muddle
STEP 2
Gently stir in the whisky
STEP 3
Top off with the other cherry and serve.
