Winemaker

Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard has been run by Caroline Lestimé, Jean-Noël’s daughter, since 1989. Their 12.5 hectares of vineyards have been certified organic since 2014 and are also farmed using biodynamic principles, although they are not yet certified. Most of Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard’s vineyards are located in the heart of Chassagne, although they own one vineyard, ‘Clos Bortier’, in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune. Planted in 2015, this site looks down on St. Aubin and produces particularly sought-after wines.

Appearance
The wine pours a radiant, pale gold colour with brilliant clarity and subtle hints of green at the rim, indicative of its youthful vigour and excellent quality.

Nose
The nose is beautifully expressive, offering a complex bouquet that evolves in the glass. Initial aromas of white flowers, such as acacia and hawthorn, intermingle with fresh citrus notes of lemon zest and lime. As the wine opens up, richer scents of ripe orchard fruits like pear, green apple, and white peach emerge. There is also a distinctive minerality, reminiscent of crushed stones, and a touch of hazelnut and vanilla, suggesting a well-integrated oak influence.

Palate
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a remarkable balance of richness and acidity. The vibrant acidity provides a refreshing lift and supports the wine’s structure. Flavors of lemon curd, green apple, and pear are complemented by nuances of apricot and a subtle hint of tropical fruit. The mid-palate reveals a creamy texture, likely from lees aging, and a layered complexity that includes notes of toasted almonds and a touch of spice from the oak.

Finish
The finish is long, precise, and elegantly mineral, with a lingering aftertaste of citrus and stone fruits. The wine’s persistence and finesse leave a lasting impression of purity and sophistication.

Food Pairing
This Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru “Les Caillerets” is versatile and pairs exceptionally well with a range of dishes. It is perfect with shellfish such as lobster and scallops, as well as richer seafood dishes like seared salmon or halibut. Poultry dishes with creamy sauces, such as chicken with morel mushrooms or a classic poulet de Bresse, are also excellent matches. Additionally, it pairs beautifully with a variety of cheeses, particularly Brie, Camembert, and Comté.
